Comparison

SEO vs GEO vs AXO vs ACO

SEO gets you ranked, GEO gets you named in AI answers, AXO (agent experience optimization) gets you chosen by AI agents, and ACO (agentic commerce optimization) gets your products bought by them. Each layer builds on the one before, so SEO still matters, and the right place to invest first is wherever your buyers drop out today.

01

How the four layers differ

The four layers differ in who reads your site and what counts as success. Keeping them apart tells you whether a problem is an indexing drop, a gap in AI answers, or an agent that cannot finish a task.

LayerWhat it gets youWho reads your siteWhat the buyer does
SEORankedSearch crawlers and peopleSearches and clicks a link
GEONamed and citedChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, AI ModeAsks an AI and reads the answer
AXOChosen and usedBrowser agents, fetchers, always-on agentsHands the task to an agent
ACOBoughtShopping agents and checkout protocolsLets the agent buy

AEO (answer engine optimization) is another name for much the same work as GEO. Both aim to get your brand into AI answers, so we treat them as one layer.

02

How search got here

Search changed in three steps in four years, and each step added a layer on top of the last. These are the dates that mark them:

  • November 2022: OpenAI releases ChatGPT, and buyers start asking questions instead of searching.
  • November 2023: a research paper by Aggarwal and others names generative engine optimization (GEO).
  • May 2024: Google rolls out AI Overviews in US search results.
  • September 2025: OpenAI and Stripe launch the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) for checkout in ChatGPT.
  • January 2026: Google announces the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard for agent checkout.
  • June 2026: Cloudflare's CEO reports that bots passed human traffic on Cloudflare's network for the first time, at 57.4% of requests.
  • August and September 2026: always-on agents arrive. xAI's Grok Bot, Meta's Muse and OpenAI's dots work in the background and act for their users.

03

Is SEO dead?

No. AI answers are built from pages that search engines can find, read and trust, so SEO is the base the other layers stand on.

Fewer searches end in a click: Pew Research Center (22 Jul 2025) found Google users clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one.

Ranking also helps you get cited, though it does not decide it. Ahrefs (2 Mar 2026) found 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews rank in Google's top 10, while 31% rank outside the top 100. Pages that are well structured, clearly sourced and easy to quote get cited from further down.

04

Why agents matter now

Bots now make more than half of web requests, and the newest agents act for buyers as well as read. Imperva's Bad Bot Report (29 Apr 2026) put automated traffic at more than 53% of all web traffic in 2025, and HUMAN Security reported that traffic from AI agents grew almost 8,000% in 2025.

These figures count requests, and people still spend more time online than bots do. But the always-on agents launched in 2026 can open a site, compare options, fill in a form and, with approval, buy. A site those agents cannot read or use loses the shortlist before a person sees it, which is the problem AXO fixes, and ACO for online stores.

Where to invest first

Start with the layer where your pipeline leaks today, and leave the rest for later. Find the row that matches your situation:

Questions

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO gets your pages ranked in search results so people click through. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your brand named in AI answers and your pages cited as sources, in tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. GEO builds on SEO, because AI answers draw on pages that search engines can already find and trust.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly, yes. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO both aim to get your brand into AI-generated answers. Some people use AEO for featured snippets and voice answers too, but the work overlaps heavily: clear answers, sourced facts and pages that are easy to quote. We treat them as one layer.

Do bots really make more web traffic than people now?

By request count, on some large networks, yes. Cloudflare reported bots at 57.4% of requests on its network in June 2026, and Imperva put automated traffic above 53% of all web traffic in 2025. These count requests, not time spent, and much of it is crawlers rather than agents acting for a person.

What is zero-click search?

Zero-click search is when a searcher gets an answer on the results page and never visits a site. AI summaries make it more common: Pew Research Center found Google users clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without. Being cited in the summary is how you stay visible.

Do we need all four layers at once?

No. Most brands start with technical SEO and GEO, then add AXO when buyers start sending agents to check pricing or book demos. ACO matters when you sell products online. Our free audit checks where your buyers drop out, so you fund one layer at a time.

Do you guarantee rankings, citations or agent picks?

No. WorkPods never guarantees rankings, AI citations, agent picks or sales, because search engines and AI models keep changing. We commit to the method: every fact has a source, an operator edits every deliverable, your team approves every change, and we measure before and after each fix.
